[Video] The Legend of Na Tcha
2025-01-02

In the heart of the World Heritage site "Historic Centre of Macao," the Procession of Na Tcha's Image is a tradition held annually on the 18th day of the fifth month in Chinese lunar calendar, on the birthday of Na Tcha, in front of the iconic Ruins of St. Paul's, one of Macao's "Eight Scenic Views." This event reflects the national intangible cultural heritage of "Na Tcha Customs & Belief" in Macao, and represents the spiritual bond of the people of Tsz Lin Wei (Pátio do Espinho) village which is next to the Ruins of St. Paul's and the Na Tcha Temple.

In recent years, Ip Tat, the president of the Association of Na Tcha Temple near the Ruins of St. Paul's and key inheritor of Macao "Na Tcha Customs & Belief", has collaborated with Zhang Yulian, a cross-disciplinary artist and curator from Zhongshan, to promote Na Tcha culture globally through "the Heartbeat of Macao" project. This initiative has not only helped spread Na Tcha culture but also drawn more tourists to Tsz Lin Wei (Pátio do Espinho) , infusing vitality into this ancient walled village, which is the oldest and only remaining walled village in Macao.
