Wang Yunwu: inventor of the Four-corner index and manager of the Commercial Press

Wang Yunwu (1888-1997) was born in Wangwu Village, Nanlang Town. In the spring of 1907, he was assigned to be President of Zhen Qun Institute. In 1909 he became Dean of Zhabei International School. At the end of 1912, he took office as Chief Editor of The New Democrat, and English professor of Beijing University, National University, Public School University of China, etc. In 1912, he was recommended by Hu Shi to work in the Commercial Translation Institute.

He persisted in the publishing guideline of “popularized education and independent academic studies”. He edited Series of Small Books about Encyclopedia, and worked as editor-in-chief of Wan You Library. He created the Four-corner index, and compiled Wang Yunwu Dictionary and Wang Yunwu Mini-dictionary.

He opened and revived the Oriental Library. Besides, he published a lot of classical books, Chinese-foreign masterpieces and schoolbooks, which enabled him to make great contribution to the modern cultural education and become an outstanding publisher.

In January, 1912, he was assigned by Dr. Sun Yat-sen as the secretary of president. Then he focused his energy on political activities. In December, 1963, he resigned from the governmental affairs to work as Director of Taiwan Commercial Press. In 1997 he died of illness in Taibei.
