Ruan Lingyu (1910-1935), born in Zuobutou Village of Nanlang Town. Born on April 26th, 1910, she was gifted and good at singing and dancing. In 1921, she was admitted by Mingxing Film studio and began her career of acting. Her first film was The Couple in Name, and later she acted the leading role in 29 films such as Reminiscence of Peking, Wild Flowers, Suicide Contract, Love and Duty, A Spray of Plum Blossoms, The Story of Sue San, New women, etc. She portrayed the woman images at different ranks of the old Chinese society with the highest level of acting in her time. She was the most popular artist in that period.
To protect her self-esteem as a person and also an artist in the old days, she committed suicide by poisoning herself with an overdose of medicine after the completion of New Women. Her released death note apparently contained a line which says “Gossip is a fearful thing”. The icon of the Chinese screen died. People in cinema field at home and abroad and the huge audience all felt sorrowful and pitiful for her death. There were innumerable messages of condolence and elegiac couplets. Her funeral was held in International Funeral Parlor. She was only 25 when committing suicide.
