In the modern history of China, Zhongshan had nurtured many talented people in the field of culture and education, such as Xiao Youmei, Lyu Wencheng, Zheng Jin, Zheng Junli, Fang Cheng, Te Wei and Huang Miaozi. They are like stars shining in the sky of the history above Zhongshan.
Among the bright cultural stars, Xiao Youmei was one of the most outstanding ones. He was China's first doctor of music, one of the founders of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, a grand master in the history of modern Chinese music, and a pioneer and founder of modern professional music education.
In 1889, at the age of 5, Xiao Youmei moved to Macao with his father from Zhongshan. Sun Yat-sen was at that time a licensed medical practitioner in Macao, and the two families were close friends. When he grew up, in the face of the suffering country, he developed the idea of "Saving the country by music" and put forward the idea of "the National Concert". He set up the first orchestra organized by China and conducted by Chinese people, and carried out various performances.
In 1916, Xiao Youmei received his doctoral degree in music, after which he devoted himself with greater enthusiasm to the development of music education. He founded China's first professional institution of higher music education and trained a number of music professionals, such as Xian Xinghai, He Lvting and Liu Xue'an.
In December 1940, as Xiao Youmei passed away due to illness, a legend of an era came to an end. However, his outstanding contributions will be remembered forever by future generations.
