"The Zhongshan Branch of the Red Cross Society of China set up AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) at National Fitness Square and its surrounding stadiums last year, which greatly reduced the probability of sudden death among citizens during exercise." With the arrival of the 34th Zhongshan Charity Parade, Zeng Xiangyou, a property manager at Zhongshan National Fitness Square, was impressed by improvements made to public life brought by the Zhongshan Charity Parade.
"Increasing access to first aid services" is one of Zhongshan's Top 10 Livelihood Projects in 2020. Therefore, the Zhongshan Branch of the Red Cross Society of China has set up another 60 AEDs at a few crowded public places and equipped 3,000 buses with emergency kits. Moreover, it has trained 20,100 first responders, and disseminated first aid knowledge to 149,741 people.
The staff responsible for AED maintenance said that at least 15 volunteers with first aid certificates would be required for each public place equipped with AEDs. At present, the Zhongshan Branch of the Red Cross Society of China has trained 500 technicians.
Citizen's donations to the Zhongshan Charity Parade and the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic helped the Zhongshan Branch of the Red Cross Society of China launch a number of public welfare and livelihood projects last year, such as sending epidemic prevention materials to overseas Chinese groups in nearly 20 countries and regions including Costa Rica, Cuba and Ecuador.
