In recent days, a panel comprised by experts from China National Light Industry Associations and China Household Electrical Appliances Association made a field survey to several Zhongshan-based small appliances enterprises in Dongfeng Town, such as Steelmate, Gemake, Mester, and Liyin. After a comprehensive appraisal, the panel decided to award Dongfeng Town the title of Manufacturing Base of Small Appliances.

Among the 7000 businesses settled in Dongfeng, 2970 are industrial enterprises. It has formed a characteristic regional economy with small appliances industry as its pillar and driven by various industries like hardware, plastic and packages printing. Dongfeng has now become the biggest manufacturing base of electric fans in the world, a leading manufacturing base of auto alarm system and parking distance control, a R&D base of gas appliance, and one of the most important gas appliance manufacturing bases in China.

1633 enterprises involving in small appliances and support services now clustered in Dongfeng. In 2010, the industry achieved an output value totaling 21.714 billion yuan. Dongfeng boasts of 300 large-scale enterprises and 185 are small appliances businesses. They have in total three provincial-level engineering technology centers and 22 municipal-level engineering technology centers. Dongfeng possesses an accumulative amount of 43 provincial-level famous brands or famous products and 22 fall into small industry business. In 2004, Dongfeng was honored the title of China Small Appliances Town and in 2006, it further became the first manufacturing base of small appliances in China.
