According to the department of forest administration, Zhongshan has nearly 1200 trees that are over a hundred years old. The figure shows that Zhongshan government and citizens have long paid attention to vegetation.

Zhongshan has invested an accumulated fund of 3.7 billion yuan planting 6.40 million trees which nearly equal two trees for each person since the movement “Improving Vegetation within Three Years” in 2011. The forest coverage rate in 2012 was 19.42% in Zhongshan, which showed a green mechanism in which government, non-governmental organizations and all citizens got involved. Zhongsha’s goal in 2017 is 19.56%. Most old trees above 600 year’s age are located in the urban areas.

The oldest tree in Zhongshan is the banyan tree of over 800 years old standing in Caobian Village South District. The youngest one on the tree list is the Tokyo sakura of only over 10 years old, which is donated from Japan by the patriot overseas Chinese Mr. Wu Guixian
