Recently, the Department of Ecology and Environment of Guangdong Province announced the water environment quality and ranking of Guangdong cities from January to August 2022. Zhongshan ranked third in Guangdong in terms of urban water quality index.

From January to August, 100% of the 89 centralized drinking water sources in use at all cities above prefectural level in Guangdong met standards.

Based on the water quality monitoring data of 149 state-controlled sections in Guangdong Province, the top three ranked areas in urban water quality index are Zhaoqing, Heyuan and Zhongshan.

Currently, drinking water in Zhongshan mainly comes from the Modaomen Waterway, Jiya Waterway, Xiaolan Waterway, Donghai Waterway and some reservoirs. There are 57 drinking water sources in Zhongshan, of which 9 are rivers, 18 are reservoirs, and 30 are inner branches connected with main rivers.
