Experts from the Guangdong Province Germplasm Resource Examination and Approval Panel recently visited the Zhongshan Nature Reserve Management and Protection Center to inspect the required conditions for the establishment of the eaglewood resource base.
The candidate site for the "Guangdong Eaglewood Germplasm Resource Base" is located in Zhongshan's Tianxin Park. It covers an area of about 228.9 hectares, of which the core area for germplasm resources preservation is 5.18 hectares.
Since 2007, the Management and Protection Center has carried out scientific researches on eaglewood trees. As of now, the center has collected eaglewood samples from 27 geographical origins from all over the world, and propagated 19,200 eaglewood seedlings.
In 2014, the center started the construction of the eaglewood germplasm resource base and opened up 77.7-mu of forest land in Tianxin Park to plant 20 eaglewood species and 5,750 seedlings. The base will be created into a multi-functional scientific research platform for the world's eaglewood germplasm resources storage, introduction, domestication, phenological observation and biological and breeding research.
