Zhongshan Municipal Library, located along the Xingzhong Avenue, is a comprehensive library. Evolving from the original Zhongshan Memorial Library built in 1935, it has a history of 60-odd years. In 1994, the library was ranked as a class 3 library of prefecture-level cities in Guangdong Province; in 1998, it was honored as “Civilized Library in Guangdong Province”; in 1999, it was promoted to a class 2 library of prefecture-level cities in Guangdong Province. Now the library has a collection of almost 380, 000 volumes, 300, 000 of which are books and 20,000 being bound volumes of newspapers. Besides, the library has a considerable amount of materials about Dr. Sun Yat-sen and Zhongshan history & culture. Thousands of books donated by overseas Chinese Mr. Huang Zufen and Shi Jingyi can also be found.
To better serve Zhongshan people, the library often holds various cultural and leisure activities. For example, in the recent 10 years, photo exhibitions, concerts and lectures were held frequently and several hundreds of films were played. Every May, the museum will join in the national “Readers Week” activity, disseminating scientific ideas and promoting knowledge. In response to the Party Central Committee’s call of Learning Hard, the library held in 1998 the selection of “Top 10 Families with a Large Book Collection” and “Top 10 Units with a Large Book Collection”.
