Zhang Jiuling, a newly-revised historical Cantonese opera, was premiered at Zhongshan Culture & Art Center on the evening of June 15.
The play stars Wen Ruqing, a national first-class actor, and Su Guojin, Yan Jinfeng, Wu Zedong, Xian Jiantang, Zhong Hanning among other renowned performers. It vividly portrays the historical legend of Zhang Jiuling, a famous prime minister of the Tang Dynasty from Guangdong. He was in charge of the construction of the Mei Pass and promoted economic and cultural exchanges between the north and the south.
The performance deeply impressed the audience with Zhang Jiuling's perseverance and wisdom. "This Cantonese opera allows me to experience the charm of traditional culture. I was quite intoxicated by performers' superb acting along with the music and atmosphere," said one of the audience.
