The museum is based on the former residence of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a key cultural relic site under the state-level protection. As a demonstration base of patriotism education, the museum covers an area of 2, 000 square meters with a building area of 6, 000 square meters. The municipal government invested 40 million yuan to build this museum, which was first open to the public in 1999. In 2001, it won the first National Decoration Project Award.
