During a field study in Zhongshan's Xiangshan Provincial Nature Reserve, the staff of Zhongshan Nature Reserve Management and Protection Center found four wild orchid varieties that have not ever been recorded in Zhongshan: geodorum densiflorum, dienia ophrydis, zeuxine parviflora, and zeuxine strateumatica.
In 2006, the Center conducted a comprehensive investigation on vascular plants in Zhongshan. According to the results, there were 1,751 varieties of wild vascular plants in Zhongshan, including 17 genera, and 21 varieties of orchids.
So far this year, the Center has recorded new wild orchid varieties in Zhongshan -- calanthe formosana rolfe and cleisostoma rostratum were found in Xiangshan Provincial Nature Reserve in January, and eulophia zollingeri was found in Zhongshan Arboretum in May.
Including the 4 newly recorded varieties, Zhongshan now has a total of 26 genera and 28 varieties of wild orchids. The new varieties manifest from the continuously improving environment and biodiversity of the city.
