Integrating wall painting art into urban renewal
2019-10-22

Around 4pm on October 16, two groups of photography lovers, with cameras and tripods, kept taking photos of the walls on the old Kanggong Road in Xinshi Community in Xiaolan Town.

They were attracted by the paintings of skipping, shuttlecock kicking, swinging, and playing basketball on the walls. Since early this year, Kanggong Road has become a popular tourist site. This old street, which was not busy previously, welcomes a number of people.

"I was impressed by the wall paintings in Penang, Malaysia. So I wonder whether we do the same for our old town," Said Yuan Yunting, a social worker at the Xinshi Family Service Center. Her idea was supported by a lot of people. Under the cooperation with the neighborhood committee, Xinshi Family Service Center launched the "Painting Splendid Colors in Community" project, and Yuan Yunting became the leader.

The transformation project is based on the theme "Our Childhood". Childhood scenes of post-70s to post-90s were painted on the walls at one-to-one scale, Real objects like swing and bicycle are also placed near the walls.

The popular walls in Xinshi Community triggered a chain reaction. Paintings of childhood, traditional handicrafts, history and culture as well as civilization conventions are drawn on old street walls in Yongning, Dongqu, Zhuyuan, Jixi and other communities in Xiaolan in exchange for new landscapes.
