Altogether, 936 appointed people’s assessors took an oath at the Zhongshan Stadium on April 22. This was the first time that the inauguration ceremony was held in Zhongshan, following the issuance and implementation of the Law of the People’s Republic of China on People’s Assessors.
The 21st Meeting of the Standing Committee of the 15th People’s Congress of Zhongshan City decided to officially appoint 936 people’s assessors, including Li Jianmei, on March 29. Coming from all walks of life within various towns and districts in the city, these assessors were well represented and they enjoyed solid public support.
“The people’s assessors system is a significant expression of people’s democracy in the judicial field, an effective form for people to participate in and supervise the judicial process,” said Shen Wenqiang, one of the people’s assessors.
It was said that people’s assessors, just like judges, would walk into the trial court and sit on the trial bench to participate in the judicial process, independently express opinions and obtain job-related guarantees in accordance with law.
