The integrated ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, commonly known as artificial lung) transfer system of Zhongshan People's Hospital came into use on May 6.
The system, which is equivalent to installing a mobile ECMO care unit on an ambulance, is the first of its kind in China. After being put to clinical use, it will quicken regional ECMO rescues and greatly improve the cure rate of patients.
In the first five months of this year, Zhongshan People's Hospital used ECMO to treat 50 patients, including nearly 20 transferred from other hospitals, registering a significant year-on-year increase.
