On January 11, Guangdong Provincial Communication Group announced that the steel deck pavement of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, China's national-level project and a core transportation hub in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, has been completed. At 1 pm that day, with the completion of the asphalt paving on the right side of the flood discharge area of the Lingdingyang Bridge in the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, the steel bridge deck pavement of the project was successfully finished, marking the high-quality completion of the world's largest-scale hot-mixed epoxy asphalt paving project.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is a cross-sea cluster project connecting bridges, islands, tunnels, and underwater interchanges. With a total length of approximately 24 kilometers, the steel deck pavement covers a total area of 380,000 square meters, making the bridge the largest-scale one of its kind in the world.
"The hot-mixed epoxy asphalt system is a typical steel deck pavement solution in China that can withstand heavy traffic," said Mao Nongping, Chief Engineer of the S15 Section of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link by Poly International Changda Engineering. The hot-mixed epoxy asphalt system boasts comprehensive characteristics such as high modulus, high toughness, wear resistance, and fatigue resistance. It exhibits excellent long-term performance during usage, better ensuring the durability, service quality, and driving comfort of the road surface.
It is understood that the construction of hot-mixed epoxy asphalt pavement requires highly advanced techniques and precision control. To meet the challenges posed by the harsh weather and high salt and high-temperature conditions of the sea surrounding the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, as well as to enhance the quality of steel bridge deck pavement, the construction team has created three innovative intelligent pavement systems using epoxy asphalt. This has significantly improved construction efficiency, control accuracy, and engineering quality, with a daily paving capacity of up to 30,000 square meters. In 2023, the project broke the world record for the daily construction area of hot-mixed epoxy asphalt for steel paving bridges three times.
Currently, the construction of various projects in the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link has entered the final stage for opening to traffic. Mechanical and electrical, civil engineering, traffic safety, and other ancillary projects have once again ushered in a construction boom. The installation and construction of bridge guardrails and expansion joints are progressing simultaneously. During the Spring Festival period, all projects will continue to maintain their progress without slowing down. It is reported that concrete asphalt pavement inside the underwater tunnel will commence after the 2024 Spring Festival.
