"Mrs Willows Dong Xiaowan", an original Cantonese opera created by Zhongshan, was performed at the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Theater on the evening of October 21.
"Mrs Willows Dong Xiaowan" is based on famous Zhongshan writer Liu Sifen's Mao Dun Literature Award-winning historical novel "Mrs Willows". It tells the touching mutual-caring story between the leading character Dong Xiaowan and the scholar Mao Xiang during the turbulent transition from the Ming to Qing Dynasty.
The play has made innovation in choreography, vocal music and costumes, with elements rarely seen in other operas, to shape characters and create the atmosphere. For example, Guqin music is used to replace traditional Chinese zither music, and claborate-style paintings of flowers, birds, mountains and rocks are integrated into costume design.
