After successfully making itself a strong education city in 2005 and all its 24 towns becoming strong provincial education towns in 2007, Zhongshan is striving with efforts for the modernization of education: the goal of nine-year compulsory education has been achieved here; twelve-year education from primary schools to senior high schools has been popularized during the period from 1988 to 1997; fifteen- year education, with the addition of three year pre-school education has been witnessed from 1998 to 2003. Up to now, there are 72 provincial first-class schools, including kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, completing the adjustment of the distribution of primary and middle schools. College admission rate keeps rising, from 631 people (technical secondary schools included), a 65.9% in 1987 to 10,410 people, a 92.92% in 2007.

There has been great enlargement of scale and increase of efficiency in vocational education. Out of the 17 independent secondary vocational schools here, 12 are key schools at national and provincial level, with 85.7% high quality degree courses above the provincial level.

The establishment of higher education is accelerating.

With an initial investment of 130 million RMB, Huangpu Middle School, the largest middle school in Zhongshan, covers an area of 100 thousand square meters (construction area: 60 thousand square meters), with as many as 70 classes.
