On the afternoon of October 29, a special labor class was given in a golden rice field in Qiaotou Village, Sanxiang Town. Some 48 students from Guishan High School of Zhongshan wearing red volunteer waistcoats harvested rice under the guidance of their teachers.
"The purpose of this activity is to allow students to experience the whole process from rice transplanting to harvesting, know the hard work of farmers, and the preciousness of our basic resources," said Luo Dongrong, a teacher from Guishan High School of Zhongshan.
In order to have a good harvest, Luo Dongrong often took his students to weed, fertilize, irrigate and kill pests in the fields after class and on weekends. Luo Dongrong and his students voluntarily donated one-third of their harvest to public welfare canteens, so that the elderly can eat fresh and healthy "Guishan" rice.
"I think such meaningful activities bring us a real sense of gain which can hardly be achieved in the classroom," said a student surnamed Xu.
Luo Dongrong is enthusiastic about public welfare education. Over the years, he has been innovating the modes of public welfare, such as serving the elderly in public welfare canteens with students, undertaking the management of rice fields to experience farming with students, and donating the produced rice to these public welfare canteens.
"Public welfare activities can release the daily academic stress of students and can also enable them to learn practical knowledge and gain pleasure in helping others," Luo Dongrong added.
