The Zhongshan Institute of Changchun University of Science and Technology (CUST), the first joint masters and doctorate education institution in Zhongshan, recently welcomed its first batch of 181 doctoral students, who will take part in practical learning and scientific research programs in Zhongshan-based optoelectronics enterprises.

Li Lijuan, executive director of the CUST Zhongshan Institute, said that the research members assigned by CUST are all professors and doctoral supervisors, more than half of whom are overseas returnees, and they have made great achievements in such fields as nano-technology, medical engineering, unmanned system development and laser technology.

"Presently, the institute has established joint practicum opportunities for postgraduates with many local enterprises including Union Optech, Aiscent Technologies, Hongjing Optoelectronic Technology and Fragrant Mountain Microwave," said Li Lijuan, adding that these graduate students will spend 0.5 to 1 year on practicums at the enterprises. The CUST Zhongshan Institute is also working on the establishment of 15 laboratories.

It is estimated that up to 1,000 master's and doctoral students will enroll in the institute in the next 3 years. The CUST Zhongshan Institute also has a plan to set up a national CUST Greater Bay Area university science park in Torch Development Zone's ZOS-Park.
